Statement
In the context of global efforts to advance sustainable development and address pressing challenges such as pollution and climate change, CSU recognises the significant responsibilities borne by higher education institutions. Guided by the Implementation Plan for the Construction of a National Education System for Green and Low-Carbon Development and the Action Plan for Carbon Neutralisation and Scientific and Technological Innovation in Colleges and Universities, and informed by the university’s operational realities, CSU hereby issues this Statement on Sustainable Development.
As a world-class university, CSU is guided by the foundational principle “Create Knowledge and Serve Society.” In pursuing this mission, the university advances its academic strengths and maintains a sustained commitment to integrating sustainability throughout its teaching, research programs, and campus life.
Sustainability Research
At CSU, sustainability research builds on the university’s recognised strengths in nonferrous metallurgy, medicine, and rail transportation. The university continues to advance green and low-carbon technologies and has presented influential “CSU solutions” for the green development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the ecological restoration of mining and metallurgical regions. Its research ecosystem is anchored by national platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center of Low-Carbon Nonferrous Metallurgy, the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Recycling of Nonferrous Metal Resources, and the Two-oriented Society and Ecological Civilization Collaborative Innovation Center, alongside emerging institutes such as the Institute for New Energy and Energy Storage. Through convening major academic events, such as the Annual Conference of the Chinese Society for Sustainable Development (CSSD) and the China Symposium on Sustainable Ironmaking and Steelmaking Technology (CSST), CSU strengthens international collaboration and reinforces the leadership role of Chinese research universities in advancing sustainable development.

Green Campus
Nestled in the historic and culturally vibrant city of Changsha, CSU offers an inspiring academic setting on a 3.17-million-square-metre campus framed by Yuelu Mountain to the west and the Xiang River to the east. The university comprises 33 secondary schools and is home to the prestigious Xiangya medical cluster, celebrated nationwide as the “South Xiangya and North Peking Union”. This cluster includes Xiangya Hospital, The Second Xiangya Hospital, The Third Xiangya Hospital, and Xiangya Stomatological Hospital, all top-tier Grade III Class A institutions. The university further extends its medical reach through collaborations with six non-directly affiliated hospitals, including the Affiliated Hunan Cancer Hospital, Hunan Children’s Hospital, Haikou Hospital, Changsha Hospital, Zhuzhou Hospital, and Changde Hospital.
Anchored in ecological civilization thought and China’s dual-carbon agenda, CSU has woven the ethos of green development into the core of its Double First-Class mission. Guided by the Ministry of Education’s Green School Program Action Plan, the university has established a cross-departmental coordination mechanism and a comprehensive resource-conservation framework, earning recognition in 2022 as one of the inaugural provincial Green School Demonstration Units.
Leveraging the green campus as a catalyst, CSU continues to translate national strategies into measurable conservation targets, intelligent management systems, and experiential ecological education practices, shaping a “Green CSU” model that contributes Chinese insight to global higher education.
