Low Carbon and Hydrogen Metallurgy Research Center, CSU (Vale-CSU Joint Laboratory for Low-Carbon and Hydrogen Metallurgy)
Strategic Scientific Research/Major Achievements
Achieving deep decarbonisation in the steel sector requires a shift from conventional carbon metallurgy to hydrogen metallurgy powered by renewable electricity and green hydrogen. CSU’s high-efficiency pure hydrogen reduction technology supports this transition, with the hydrogen-based shaft-furnace direct-reduction and electric-arc-furnace short-process route identified as a key pathway. In collaboration with SANY Group, Sinosteel MECC, and Ruikang Zhongyuan, the team developed an integrated zero-carbon model connecting green electricity, green hydrogen, and green iron. This effort delivered a 200,000-ton-per-year pure hydrogen direct-reduced iron production line, marking a significant milestone in advancing China’s dual-carbon agenda.
