CSU Research Center for Typical Waste Treatment and Ecological Building Materials&Technology Center for Black-smelly Water Treatment and Resource Utilization in Hunan

SDG-6.3

SDG 6.3

By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.

Established in 2019 under CSU’s School of Civil Engineering, the Research Center for Typical Waste Treatment and Ecological Building Materials brings together leading expertise from CSU and the University of Technology Sydney to drive innovation in sustainable waste management. With 12 dedicated researchers and more than 50 postgraduate students, the Center advances the national green-development agenda through three research pillars: next-generation technologies for reducing and recycling construction waste, integrated treatment and resource-recovery solutions for municipal solid waste and sewage sludge, and the development and life-cycle assessment of ecological building materials derived from waste. The Center is committed to producing research of international relevance, promoting large-scale solid-waste utilisation, and contributing meaningfully to environmental sustainability.

Led by Xiangtan Municipal Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd. with CSU as a key partner, the Technology Center for Black-smelly Water Treatment and Resource Utilization in Hunan serves as a provincial hub for ecological innovation. Responding to national priorities for building a resource-saving and environmentally sound society, the Center advances research across three major fronts: integrated remediation systems that merge nanobubble aeration, composite microbial technologies, and ecological floating-island engineering; biochar-driven approaches for sediment recovery; and the development of core technologies that transform dredged sediments into high-value ecological building materials. Through coordinated research efforts and the integration of scientific and industrial expertise, the Center has established a comprehensive technological toolbox for ecological restoration and resource utilisation, supported by a growing range of proprietary technologies and eco-material products. These achievements significantly enhance Hunan’s leadership in polluted-water treatment and sustainable resource recovery.
