On June 7, Clive Landis, Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Cave Hill, Barbados, led a delegation to Central South University (CSU). They met with Li Zhihong, Vice President of CSU, as well as leaders of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges and Xiangya School of Medicine.
Li Zhihong highlighted some basic facts about CSU's medical teaching and research. He expected to figure out specific domains to start cooperation and facilitate the implementation of cooperative projects, based on the memorandum of cooperation (MOU) signed previously between the two universities. Clive Landis introduced the characteristics and edges of UWI's medical research and hoped to start cooperation from the medical field, especially from specific subfields, such as public health.
Both sides discussed the research on healthy aging and diabetes, joint application for scientific research programs, joint cultivation projects, and cooperation in the Confucius Institute. Preliminary cooperation intentions were established.
During the visit, Clive Landis and his delegation were also shown around Xiangya Hospital and learned about its history. They exchanged with leaders of the hospital. Clive Landis expressed his willingness to hold training sessions for medical students and residents to exchange ideas, under the theme of "Doctors East, Doctors West". He intended to initiate UWI's first cooperative project in the medical field with China at Xiangya Hospital.
