Dr. Zuo Tieyong
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Expert in Refractory Metal Materials, Rare-Earth Functional Materials, and Aluminium–Magnesium Materials and Processing Technologies
Dr. Zuo Tieyong, born in Beijing in 1936, is a materials scientist and circular-economy expert, and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has served as Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at CSU and Beijing University of Technology. Dr. Zuo entered the metal forming program at the Northeast Institute of Technology in 1954 and, after graduating in 1958, began his academic career at the Central South University of Technology, where he successively served as Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, and Vice President. In 1991, he was appointed Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology of the State Education Commission. He was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995 and became President of Beijing University of Technology in 1996. He was named a Beijing Municipal Model Worker in 2000. In 2003, he became President of the Branch for Local University Education Research under the China Association of Higher Education, and in 2005, he was appointed Dean of the Institute of Circular Economy at Beijing University of Technology. Dr. Zuo received the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2006 and the Third National Teaching Master Award of the Ministry of Education in 2007, and was recognized as an Influential Figure in 30 Years of Reform and Opening-Up in China’s Nonferrous Metals Industry that same year. In 2012, he received the Outstanding Contribution Award for Industry-University-Research Collaboration from the China Industry-University-Research Institute Collaboration Association. His research has focused on refractory metal materials, rare-earth functional materials, and aluminium–magnesium materials and their processing technologies.
Biography

From 1954, Dr. Zuo Tieyong studied metal forming at the Northeast Institute of Technology (now Northeastern University).

After graduating in 1958, he joined the Central South University of Technology (now CSU) as a faculty member, where he advanced through the ranks to Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, and Vice President.

He became a member of the Communist Party of China in January 1960.

In 1991, Dr. Zuo was appointed Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology of the State Education Commission, a position he held until 1996.

He served as Vice President of the Nonferrous Metals Society of China in 1994 and was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995, in the Division of Chemical, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering (Material Synthesis and Processing).

From 1996 to 2004, he served as President of Beijing University of Technology.

In April 2005, he became the founding Dean of the newly established Institute of Circular Economy at Beijing University of Technology.

In 2006, he received the Sixth Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
