Dr. Xia Jiahui
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Expert in Human and Medical Genetics
Dr. Xia Jiahui, born on 6 February 1937 in Yiyang, Hunan Province, is a leading human and medical geneticist, a pioneer of modern human and medical genetics in China, a founder of clinical genetics in the country, and the founder of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics. He is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at CSU. After graduating from the Department of Biology at Hunan Normal University in 1961, he joined the Department of Biology at Hunan Medical College, where he later served as Deputy Director from 1978 to 1981. In 1984, he led the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics, and in 1985 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1986. From 1987 to 2009, he served as Director of Hunan Medical College, and from 1991 to 2005 as Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics. Dr. Xia was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999. He subsequently served as Chair of the Academic Committee of the National Talent Training Base for Life Sciences and Technology in 2002, and as Dean of the College of Biological Science and Technology at CSU from 2004 to 2006. In 2012, he founded the Hunan Jiahui Genetics Hospital. Dr. Xia has devoted his career to modern human and medical genetics and authored China’s first textbook in the field, Medical Genetics Lecture, in 1976.
Biography

Dr. Xia Jiahui was born on 6 February 1937 in Taojiang County, Yiyang, Hunan Province.

From July 1957 to July 1961, he studied in the Department of Biology at Hunan Normal University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

On 5 June 1959, he submitted his first application to join the Communist Party of China.

From January 1961 to January 1998, he served in the Department of Biology at Hunan Medical College, and from January 1978 to January 1981 he was Deputy Director of the department.

In 1984, he was commissioned by the Ministry of Health to lead the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics.

From January to June 1985, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.

He became a member of the Communist Party of China in October 1986 and subsequently served as Party Branch Secretary.

From January 1987 to January 2009, he served as Director and Professor at Hunan Medical College.

From January 1991 to January 2005, he concurrently served as Deputy Director and Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Medical Genetics.

He was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

In January 2002, Dr. Xia was appointed Chair of the Academic Committee of the National Talent Training Base for Life Sciences and Technology.

From January 2004 to January 2006, he served as Dean of the College of Biological Science and Technology at CSU.

In 2012, he founded the Hunan Jiahui Genetics Hospital.
