
Dr. Zhou Honghao
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Expert in Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics
Dr. Zhou Honghao, born on 29 May 1939 in Changsha, Hunan Province, is a leading pharmacogeneticist and clinical pharmacologist, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology at CSU, Director of the Xiangya Medical Laboratory at CSU, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, and Chief Professor of the State Key Discipline of Pharmacology. After graduating from Wuhan Medical College in 1962, he worked in hospitals under the Air Force of the Guangzhou Military Region before joining the Department of Pharmacology at Hunan Medical University in 1978. He became a member of the China Democratic League in 1982 and was a visiting scholar at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong from 1983 to 1984. From 1986 to 1991, he conducted research in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University in the United States. After returning to China in 1991, he joined the Institute of Genetic Pharmacology at Hunan Medical University, where he established the country’s first institute dedicated to clinical pharmacology. He served as Vice President of Hunan Medical University in 1995; from 1999 to 2002, he was Director of the Institute of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology at CSU; and in 2002, he became Director of CSU’s Institute of Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Zhou was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2005 and became a Founding Member of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in 2019. Throughout his career, he has focused on pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, discovering and elucidating key phenomena, mechanisms, and patterns underlying genetic determinants of interethnic and interindividual variation in drug response, and establishing a pharmacogenetic theoretical framework with distinctive national characteristics.
