A red banner, which reads “carry on the spirit of CSU, aim high and keep in line with righteous people, to contribute to our families and country, be a noble person and make remarkable achievements”, was posted around the venue. In the morning of June 22, the 2018 Graduation Ceremony and Degree Awarding Ceremony of CSU were held at the stadium of the new campus.
Huang Boyun and Gui Weihua, academician of CAE, leaders including Yi Hong, Tian Hongqi, Tao Lijian, Chen Zhiya, Jiang Jianxiang, Chen Chunyang, Zhou Kechao, Zhu Xuehong, Guo Xueyi and Huang Jianling, heads of secondary schools, heads of relevant functional departments as well as representatives of the faculty attended the ceremony. Wei Huacheng, representative of alumni, Vice Chairman of BAIC Group and one alumnus of 1982 class, and families of graduates also took part in the ceremony upon invitation. Professor Erwin Neher, the Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology or Medicine, was also present to extend his congratulations. The ceremony was presided over by Yi Hong, the Secretary of CPC Committee of CSU.
Tao Lijian, Executive Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee of CSU, announced the decision to commend the outstanding graduates of CSU. In particular, 1491 students were awarded the title of 2018 Outstanding Graduates of CSU, 129 students were awarded the title of 2018 Outstanding Graduates as Grassroots Service Volunteer of CSU, and 67 students were awarded the title of 2018 Outstanding Graduates as National Defense Volunteers of CSU. Participating leaders and guests presented awards to the representatives of award-winning graduates.
Zhu Xuehong, Vice President of CSU, announced the resolution of the Academic Degree Committee of CSU to award 7857 students the bachelor degree, 4269 students the master degree and 642 students the doctor degree. Academicians and leaders presented certificates to the representatives of graduates with degrees, turned the tassel and took a group photo.
Shao Junli, a graduate, Hao Rong, a postgraduate and He Jun, a representative of teachers, made speeches. Shao Junli, who has been selected to work in Jintang County, Sichuan, said that she learned the spirit of love and devotion from CSU and that she will follow the motto of Learning by Doing and Learning for Using and the ethos of Virtue, Truth, Perfection, Inclusiveness and work to meet the pressing needs of the country and the people. Hao Rong, who has decided to work in Xiangya Hospital upon graduation, shared her aspiration when she came to CSU at the age of 18 and her study experience. She said that this year also marks the 18thbirthday of CSU and that we have grown up with CSU together and witnessed each other’s achievements. She said that as the young generation standing at the starting point of a new history, we will find our positions in this era and stay committed to our original aspirations and dreams. As a teacher, he Jun expressed his joy and reluctance to part. He shared what he had gone through after graduation. He expressed the hope that all students will stay hungry for knowledge and curious about the unknown, enhance their resistance and resilience, and carry on the spirit of CSU.
Wei Huacheng expressed that all the students would bear the following words in mind: always regard the realization of mission as the pursuit of yourself, your business and your team; always take improvement and enhancement as your soul to make yourself better; always treat team work as an important task, because it is part of your job; always encourage yourself and your team to insist the characteristics of resilience and persistence; always remember and actively utilize “communication and exchange” which is the key to address problems and difficulties; always treat authority and trust as your responsibility and convey it to all your partners; always pursue performance and results as the goal and criterion.
Professor Erwin Neher, the Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology or Medicine, shared his ideas with the graduates: there is no end in science, and they just embark on the path of science; only cooperation leads to win-win outcomes in today’s world, and everyone should embrace the perspective of international cooperation; don’t pursue quick success, and hard work will be rewarded handsomely. He expressed the hope that CSU will also foster a Nobel Prize winner.
Tian Hongqi, President of CSU, delivered a speech entitled “whoever is brave will overcome all obstacles, and whoever is persevering will scale new heights”, extending her congratulations and wishes for the graduates as well as her most sincere gratitude and highest respect for their families and teachers.
From the “China Jin” team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering to the award-winning team from the Xiangya Hospital, from the Tianyou Class of the School of Civil Engineering to the Engineering Experimental Class of the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, from the men’s basketball team, which was made it all the way to CUBA final, to the students’ orchestra, which has performed on international stages on several occasions, from Wu Yujia from the School of Literature & Journalism, Huang Shuai from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Yang Wantao from the School of Energy Science and Engineering and Wang Shaofeng from the School of Resources and Safety Engineering……to Zhou Yihong from the 3rdXiangya Hospital of CSU, Tian Hongqi mentioned the names of outstanding graduates of CSU, which was met with rounds of applause and enthusiastic response from the audience.
In the face of graduates who are about to take off from CSU, Tian Hongqi expressed her wishes: courage is the most convincing proof of insight, and students of CSU should have the courage to work hard; solidarity is the most convincing proof of power, and all students of CSU should concentrate on hard work; perseverance is the most convincing proof of results, and all students of CSU should work hard consistently. “Graduation is the starting point of a new journey. Yi Hong extended his congratulations and best wishes for the graduates once again. “Wherever you go, however far you walk, however high you fly, please don’t forget the spirit of CSU and your responsibilities as a student of CSU. You will always be the students of CSU and CSU will care for you all the way. You can turn to CSU for warmth and support anytime. You are welcome to come home often”, he said.
