On June 15, Central South University (CSU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and GEM Co., Ltd. to deepen the existing partnerships. The signing ceremony was attended by Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Xu Kaihua, Chairman of GEM, Yi Hong, Secretary of CPC Committee of CSU, Guo Xueyi, Vice President of CSU, and Chen Lizhang, Vice President of CSU. The event was presided over by Guo Xueyi.
In December 2023, Yi Hong led a delegation to Indonesia. During this trip, he exchanged with Budi Gunadi Sadikin and Xu Kaihua. Discussions covered deepening cooperation in metallurgical disciplines, life sciences and medicine, and interdisciplinary medical engineering.
During the ceremony, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, CSU, and GEM on Developing Capabilities in Biotechnology and Medicine was signed by Laode Musafin, Director for Planning of Health Workforce, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Chen Lizhang, Vice President of CSU, and Zhang Kun, Deputy General Manager of GEM and President of GEM Central Research Institute. The three parties reached a consensus on launching a medical program with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and GEM, based on the existing master's degree program in metallurgical engineering jointly initiated by CSU, Indonesia Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, and GEM. They planned to provide educational sponsorship for selected Indonesian students to study relevant programs—such as Bioinformatics, Pathology, and Pathophysiology—at CSU.
Yi Hong stated that CSU and Indonesia have witnessed fruitful cooperation for years. He emphasized that both sides have conducted deep and extensive collaboration in international talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation, especially with support from GEM. Besides, Yi Hong said signing the MOU will deepen the partnerships among the three and expected more win-win cooperation in biotechnology and medicine.
Budi Gunadi Sadikin noted that Indonesia is looking forward to exploring an array of plans for cooperation in several fields—such as education and health—with CSU when signing the MOU, to enhance exchanges in domains including medical education, and biomedical science and technology. Meanwhile, he, as Chair of the Board of Trustees at ITB, proposed that CSU's development experience provides ITB with important references. Besides, he expected to enhance inter-university cooperation in programs, such as metallurgical engineering, medical education, and rail transit, through student training, teacher exchanges, and joint scientific research programs.
Xu Kaihua emphasized that GEM has built a world-class high-tech industrial park for the production of nickel resources in Indonesia in the past five years, launched a master's degree program in metallurgical engineering technology and new energy materials with the Indonesian government and CSU, and signed an agreement with CSU and ITB to establish the first China-Indonesia international laboratory. He said GEM will continue exploring its soft model that combines "technology and culture" for going global and elevate cooperation to a new height with the Indonesian government and CSU.
Before the event, Budi Gunadi Sadikin and his delegation visited Xiangya School of Nursing, Xiangya School of Medicine, and the Medical Science Research Center of Xiangya Hospital. They learned about the history and culture, professional and practical-based student training, medical talent cultivation, and scientific research achievements of these three hospitals. The delegation was also shown around the Chinese National Engineering Research Center for Control & Treatment of Heavy Metal Pollution to observe the treatment process of heavy metal wastewater using biological agents and scientific research progress. They also attended a class for Indonesian students at CSU and exchanged with these students to learn about their achievements in the international master's degree program in metallurgical engineering jointly initiated by CSU, the Indonesian government, and GEM.
At noon on the same day, CSU President Li Jiancheng met with the Indonesian delegation.
It is said that CSU, GEM, and Indonesia Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs have been jointly cultivating Indonesian students for the master's degree program in metallurgical engineering since 2019, and a total of over 80 students have been enrolled. This year, there will be more master's degree programs, from metallurgical engineering to rail transit, life sciences and medicine, and international trade. The programs aim to train 1,000 high-level Indonesian talents in six years. In November 2023, CSU, GEM, and ITB reached an agreement based on student training to jointly build the China-Indonesia Joint Research Laboratory for New Energy Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Technology, and deepen cooperation in scientific research.
The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in China, ITB, Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia, GEM, and other institutions, and leaders of relevant departments at CSU.
