Zuo Tieyong , Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Zuo Tieyong, a CPC member, male, Han nationality, and an Academician of China Engineering Academy, was born in September in Beijing. In 1958, he graduated from Northeastern University.
Zuo served as Professor, PhD Supervisor and Vice President of Central South University from 1958 to 1991, as Director of Department of Science and Technology of State Education Commission from 1991 to 1996, as President of the Beijing University of Technology from 1996 to 2004, and as Vice-chairman of CAST from 1996 to 2006. In May 1995, he was elected as Academician of Chinese Engineering Academy. Currently, he is the Director of the Academic Committee of Beijing University, a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the Deputy Director of Education Committee of Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Deputy Director of Science and Technology Committee of Ministry of Education, the Director of University Laboratory Steering Committee of Ministry of Education, the Vice-chairman of China Nonferrous Metals Society, the Chairman of Local University Education Research Branch of Chinese Higher Education Association, the Chinese committee of the International Pacific Science Society (PSA) and the International Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), and the Director of the academic committee of the State Key Laboratory and other academic positions among major universities.
Zuo is a well-known expert in material sciences and engineering, who is an important contributor to the national 973 Program. He has been engaged in teaching and research work in the field of materials science, specializing in metallic materials and plastic processing especially in refractory metals, rare earth functional materials, low plastic material, aluminum and magnesium materials and the processing, in which he has reached high-level academic attainment and made outstanding contributions. In recent years, he has opened up the field of environment ecological materials in China and promoted an in-depth study on recycling economy. In the field of teaching, he has been awarded with the National Excellent Courses Award, the National Universities Distinguished Teacher Award and the National Teaching Achievement Award. In scientific research, he undertook a number of national key scientific and technological projects under the 7th 5-year Plan, the 8th 5-year Plan, the 9th 5-year Plan, and the 10th 5-year Plan, and has made achievements on a number of systematic and creative research, to promote the national defense, military, basic materials of electronics industry, and bring remarkable economic and social benefits. In addition, he has been awarded with 15 national and provincial awards in science and technology. In 1991, he was awarded with the honorary title of the National Outstanding Contributions of Young Experts in Science and Technology.
