Foundation of Powder Metallurgy Research Institute (PMRI)
Powder Metallurgy Research Institute (PMRI) of Central South University is a comprehensive institution of integrating education, scientific research and industrialization. Supported by the institute, there are three state level bases, namely “State key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy”, “National Key Laboratory of Light Weight and High Strength Structural Materials” and “National Engineering Research Center of Powder Metallurgy”. PMRI has 2 teaching departments, 8 branches of institute and 5 experimental (testing) centers. The institute has 300 full-time faculty and staff, including 45 doctorial tutors, 48 full professors (researchers), 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 distinguished professors and 4 chair professors of Changjiang River scholars, 4 candidates of national “Thousand Talents Program”, 3 awardees of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The institute has one national key discipline (Materials Science and Engineering), doctoral degree programs and master degree programs of the first-level discipline and post-doctoral flow station. PMRI currently has about 1500 full-time students, including 50 postdoctoral fellows, 400 students in master’s programs, 160 in doctoral programs. Up to now, PMRI has cultivated more than 5000 all kinds of high-quality graduates with professional skills now working in the field of the higher education, scientific research, business management and government departments.
PMRI has set up a systematic research system focusing on material study. The research field ranges from fundamental theoretical research, applied basic research and engineering research to the detection and evaluation of materials performances, including material foundation and phase diagram calculation, refractory metal and cemented carbide, friction and antifriction material, powder superalloy, special ceramics, lightweight alloys, electrical and electronic materials, carbon-based composites and aviation braking system. The research results are applied widely in industrial sector of aviation, aerospace, weapons, ships, electron and nuclear industry and in many branches of related national economic construction. In recent years PMRI completed 500 national scientific research projects early or late, including the National 863 Projects, National 973 Projects, National Natural Science Foundation, major national science and technology projects and national defense industry. PMRI has been awarded 60 national level, provincial and ministerial level prizes, of which 3 times first prize for State Technological Innovation Award(Scientific and Technological Progress), and more than 200 invention patents.
PMRI is committed to coordinated development in production, teaching and research integration. Based on the National Engineering Research Center of Powder Metallurgy as an incubator, PMRI established numbers of discipline companies one after another by industrializing high new technology, including Hunan Boyun New Materials Co., Ltd.(a listed company) and Honeywell-Boyun airplane system Co. , Ltd.(a joint venture with Honeywell, USA).
PMRI is a director of Chinese Materials Research Society and deputy director of Chinese Nonferrous Metal Society as well as one of the chairmen of Powder Metallurgy Association of China (in preparation) and has an increasing impact in the international material field. It has established a wide and deep academic exchange and cooperative relationship with universities and research institutes in United State, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia and other countries and regions.

New material research laboratory (1960-1979.8)
November 1, 1952, Central-South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy founded
September, 1955, set up cemented carbide major
September, 1958, set up the country's first powder metallurgy major
1960, New material research laboratory founded
In April, to meet the stringent demand of new materials made of powder metallurgy from national advanced science and technology, national defense and military industry, agreed by the Party Group of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, Institute party committee and administration decided to set up “New material research laboratory” in Metal Technology Department.
June 4, He Long, former member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC, vice chairman of the central military commission and vice-premier, visited the institute and asked detailed questions about the new material research.
1966-1969, scientific research works were stagnated due to the influence of “the Great Cultural Revolution”
In the second half of 1969, scientific research works were restored

1. School of Powder Metallurgy of Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (1979.9-1985.6)
In 1979, School of Powder Metallurgy founded
On September 1, agreed by the Party Group of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry and Provincial Culture and Education Office, School of Powder Metallurgy was founded based on new material research laboratory
On December 13, the founding conference of School of Powder Metallurgy was held on sports ground.
On may 21, 1980, School of Powder Metallurgy received a congratulatory telegram award by the Communist Party of China, the State Council and Central Military Commission for its contribution to the development and successful launching of carrier rocket to Pacific Ocean.
In January 1982, the Teaching and Research Section of materials department was incorporated into the School of Powder Metallurgy, which started the development model of three-in-one combination of teaching ,scientific research and industrialization.
On Oct.16, School of Powder Metallurgy received a congratulatory telegram award by the Communist Party of China, the State Council and Central Military Commission for its contribution to the successful launching of carrier rocket at sea.
On April 18, 1984, School of Powder Metallurgy received a congratulatory telegram award by the Communist Party of China, the State Council and Central Military Commission for its contribution to the development and successful launching of experimental communication satellite.
2. School of Powder Metallurgy of Central South University of Technology (1985.7-2000.4)
On July 29, 1985, approved by the State Education Commission, Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was renamed Central South University of Technology. Fang Yi autographed the university name. This marked the transformation of University from single-subject engineering school to integrated University of Technology.
In June 1989, the State key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy was approved to construct relying on School of Powder Metallurgy by State Development Planning Commission, which passed the state-recognized laboratory acceptance check in Oct.1995.
On May 11, 1990, State Bureau of Technical Supervision approved the establishment of Powder Metallurgy Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center of China Non-ferrous Metal General Corporation relying on School of Powder Metallurgy
On Oct.15, Powder Metallurgy was granted master's program and doctoral program by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council.
On March 8, 1993, Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade granted import and export rights of technology products to School of Powder Metallurgy as the first research institutes.
On January 10, 1994, The State Planning Commission approved by consent the feasibility study report of National Engineering Research Center of Powder Metallurgy, and the construction started officially.
On Feb 14, post-doctoral research station of powder metallurgy was approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and National Management Committee of Postdoctoral Fellows
On May 12, 1996, Li Lanqing, member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and vice-premier of the State Council, visited the school.
On Nov.15 1997, Qian Weichang , vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited the school.
On Feb 9,1999, Zhou Guangzhao, vice Chairman of National People's Congress and president of the China Association for Science and Technology, visited the school
On Aug.2, School of Powder Metallurgy received a congratulatory telegram award by the State Council and Central Military Commission for its contribution to the successful flight experiment of new type long-distance ground to ground strategic missile.
On Dec 6, School of Powder Metallurgy received certificate of the ISO9001 international quality system certification and became one of the first research institutes in the national education system that passed the ISO9001 international quality system certification
3. School of Powder Metallurgy of Central South University (2000.4-2002.1)
On April 29, Central South University was established by an amalgamation of the former Central South University of Technology, Hunan medical sciences university and Changsha Railway University.
III. Powder Metallurgy Research Institute (2002.1-)
1. On Jan 25, 2002, the University decided to establish Powder Metallurgy Research Institute
In Feb, Ministry of Education approved that Materials Science and Materials Physics and Chemistry were state-levels key disciplines and agreed to add a new undergraduate major “Powder Material Science and Engineering”
In April, Hunan Joint Research Centre of Nanomaterial Engineering Technology founded.
On Sept.19, Luan Enjie, deputy director of National Defense Science & Technology Committee and director of National Space Administration visited the Institute and issued research and production licenses of Weapons and Equipment.
On Nov.1, Powder Metallurgy Research Institute held its unveiling ceremony. Shi Changxu and Wang Dianzuo, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and academicians of the two academies, Zuo Tieyong, vice-president of the China Association for Science and Technology and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Huang Peiyun, the experienced academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the founder of School of Powder Metallurgy, attended the ceremony
2. In March 2004, Ministry of Education ratified agreed to add a new undergraduate major “material chemistry”
3. On Jan.11, Engineering technology industrialization center of Sino-Russian international new materials founded and held its unveiling ceremony.
On Mar.28, “ Preparation technique of C/C aviation brake materials” was awarded the first prize of National Invention, which broke the record of the six consecutive years of no recipient. Chinese President Hu Jintao presented the award in the Great Hall of the People.
On July 16, Ja Qinlin, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited the institute.
On August 13, Wen Jiabao, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council visited the institute.
On Oct.29, Wu Bangguo, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, Wang Zhaoguo, member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, Shen Huaren, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress and secretary-general, visited the Institute.
On Nov.18, Sate Commission of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry and General Armaments Department ratified agreed to build XXXXXX key laboratory of national defense science and technology.
4. On April 5, 2006, Powder Metallurgy Research Institute received certificate of the second level secrecy qualification unit of Secrecy Qualification Certification Committee
On April 10, Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the central commission for discipline inspection, visited the institute.
On September 24, Xu Kuangdi, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the president of Chinese Academy of Engineering, visited the institute.
On Nov.18, Zhou Guangzhao, merit scientist of "Two Bombs and One Satellite" and honorary president of the China Association for Science and Technology, visited the institute.
On Nov.19, State Councilor Chen Zhili visited the institute and inscribed an epigraph : to build a broader plateform, to make great progress, to make greater contribution.
5. On April 30, 2007, Member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and Vice-Premier of the State Council Zeng Peiyan visited the institute.
On May 15, Li Changcun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited the institute
On Aug.31, Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology visited the institute and wrote an inscription of innovation and pursuit of excellence
6. On April 10,2008, He Guo qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the central commission for discipline inspection, visited the institute.
