School of Aeronautics and Astronautics

In order to meet the needs of the developing of the Chinese aerospace industry and the requirements on qualified personnel, to accelerate the growth of the research discipline of aeronautics and astronautics, and to build a new high-level strategic industrial platform, in June 28, 2009, the school of aeronautics and astronautics was founded in the Central South University by integrating faculties in several advantageous disciplines from the school of information science and technology, the school of mechanical and electrical engineering, the school of material science and engineering, and the school of powder metallurgy research. The school of aeronautics and astronautics has a high starting point of research and a high standard of teaching, and is a training base for highly qualified aerospace specialists.

There are three departments in the school: the department Aerospace Engineering, the department of detection, guidance and control, the department of aerospace material, and the institute of aircraft landing system. The school provides two national-defense key specialties in the undergraduate level: detection, guidance and control technology, and material science and engineering. The school provides doctoral programs and postdoctoral positions in two Level 1 disciplines: material science and engineering, and control science and engineering. The school also provides master programs in the Level 1 discipline of aerospace science and technology, and in four Level 2 disciplines: aerospace vehicle design, aerospace propulsion theory and engineering, aerospace manufacture engineering, and man-machine-environment engineering. The faculties are highly qualified and professional, and all teachers have a PhD Degree.

The researches in the school are characterized with the discipline of aeronautics and astronautics. The main research fields are high-temperature composite, heavy-load aircraft wheel and self-adaptive braking system, modern aircraft manufacturing technology, and guidance, navigation, and control of aerospace vehicles. Meanwhile, the school has an aircraft landing system laboratory, a national-defense key laboratory of aerospace material, and a national-defense key laboratory of detection, guidance, and control technology.

At present, the school undertakes a key project in the national “863” plan -  modern vehicle braking technology, a project from the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China - runway self-adaptive identification technology, and many projects granted by the Commission of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Also, as a partner, the school cooperates with Changsha Xing Hang brake Co. Ltd in the R&D of the airplane wheel braking system of COMAC919 - a national key project on a big airplane.

The school has established three five-year plans. The first one is to complete the discipline layout, to establish a few research directions with aerospace characteristics, and to connect the student education with the major aerospace research projects. The second step is to complete the discipline construction, to innovate in aerospace technology, and to develop aerospace products. In this way, the school will become an integrated entity emphasizing both on teaching and research. The last stage is to become an academy with distinct aerospace characteristics and a prestigious reputation both in and out of china.
