Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

The history of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCCE) at Central South University dates back to 1952. Over the years, CCCE has developed rapidly and become one of the most important chemical colleges in China. Currently, CCCE includes seven departments (Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Department of Organic and Polymer Chemistry,  Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Analytic Chemistry, Department of Resource Chemistry, Department of Applied Chemistry and Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering), one experimental teaching center. The College has 173 research and teaching faculty members, of which there are 53 doctoral supervisors, 52 full-time professors, 56 associate professors and 29 assistant professors. We are proud of our high education level faculty members. One professor was nominated as the “National Excellent Teacher”; three distinguished professor has been awarded Thousand Talents Program” by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee in China; two professors have been awarded “Hundred Talents Program” by the Chinese Academy of Sciences; one young professor has been awarded the distinguished young investigator grant by the National Science Foundation of China. Seven faculty members have joined the New-Century Training Programs Foundation for the Talents by the Ministry of Education. There are about 2000 students, including 600 graduatesincluding 100 PhD students and 20 postdoctors in the college.

Teaching

The college has three first-class discipline research centers for postdoctors (Chemical Engineering and Technology, Chemistry and Metallurgical Engineering), three first-class doctoral discipline (Chemical Engineering and Technology, Chemistry and Metallurgy) and two provincial key disciplines in Hunan Province (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering & Technology). Applied Chemistry is “The National Characteristic Specialty”.

The college undertakes all fundamental chemistry courses for entire undergraduate students enrolled to the programs covering engineering, science and medicine. More than 200 classes with 6500 students completed more than 50,000  credit hours per year. The college offers three undergraduate programs on Chemical Engineering and Technology, Applied Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering.

The college developed a specific system with diversities under the “broad and general chemistry” theory and has four national essential courses in physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and general chemistry of engineering. Since 2010, 15 textbooks have been published by our faculties.

The college has four teaching teams on physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and general chemistry in engineering. The team of general chemistry received the “Excellent Teaching Team” Award and Prof. Qiyuan Chen was nominated as the “National Excellent Teacher”.

The college has performed 17 teaching project including11 national level items and 6 provincial level items since 2000. In accordance with these reforms, all the undergraduate students have been trained by the “basic requirement of characteristics” model to develop their strengthened ambitions and innovative abilities. This highly efficient education system has won eight teaching achievement awards (four national awards and four provincial awards.

Research

The research programs at the college have been extensively supported by the Chinese Government and CSU for its excellence in research. For the past five years, the college has carried out more than fifteen national key research projects such as national  “973” and “863” High-Tech projects, and over 50 national projects, such as China Natural Science Foundation, and International Cooperation Projects of Science and Technology Ministry of China. The college has also won the first place  of National Scientific and Technological progress, the second prize of National Science award, as well as provincial/ministerial level scientific and technological awards. The research funding is summed up to 30 million RMB, and the publication numbersof SCI and EI cited papers ranked as the top 10 of the universitys in China .

The college has several high-level research groups, including applied chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology, resources and environment. Many achievements in the area of metallurgy, energy and new materials, fine chemicals, modern Chinese medicine and biosensing have been obtained. The research work has been published in prominent journals such as J. Am. Chem. Soc. and Adv. Mater.. It is recognized one of the leading centers for research and teaching in Chemistry and Chemical Engineer in China.

Achievement and International Recognition

Being built three decades, the college has trained nine thousand graduates. Many outstanding graduates are found to be playing leading roles in many areas such as new materials, biotechnology, and management. Mr. Chuanfu Wang is an outstanding representative.and He is currently the president of BYD and the richest man in Chinain 2009 and received the "Stars of Asia" honorary title issued by the former U.S. president Mr. Bill Clinton .

The college has developed strong overseas relationships and collaborations. Long-term and well-founded relationships have been established with several foreign universities and companies, such as Texas A & M University, University of Goettingen, Tokyo University, University of Western Ontario, Monash University and Mittal Steel Company. These relationships allow the extensive exchange of students and professors.

Many eminent scientists were awarded as honorary professors of CCCE, includingProf.  F. A, Cotton, the fellow of National Academi, Prof. James R. Cross from Yale University, Prof. Kraatz and Jesse Zhu from University of Western Ontario, and Prof. Brodowsky from University of Kiel.

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has established many international communications and cooperation programs. CCCE has hosted several international conferences, such as “International Conference on Chemometric and Bioinformatics”and “The 1st International Conference on Chemometrics”. In this context, more than 40 faculty and staff members have been invited to attend international scientific events and give talks in various countries such as US, UK, Canada, France and Norway.
