Former Central South University of Technology
Central South University of Technology, formerly known as Central-South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was established merging the Mining and Metallurgy Departments of 6 universities, including Wuhan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Guangxi University, Hunan University and Nanchang University in 1952 during the reorientation of national higher education institutions; in 1960, it entered the list of national key universities; in 1985, it changed its name to Central South University of Technology, marking its transition from a single-subject institute of technology to a comprehensive university of technology; in September 1996, it passed the approval review for national “Project 211” and became one of the national key universities facing the 21st century. The university used to be affiliated to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Metallurgical Industry of the P.R.C. and China National Non-ferrous Metals Industry Corporation successively and finally was directly under the Ministry of Education of the P.R.C once again in September 1998.
The university is located at the foot of Yuelu Mountain and on the bank of Xiangjiang River in Changsha city; the campus covers an area of 1.07 million m2, including a floor area of 650000 m2. It’s a “Civilization Model Organization” and “Garden-style Organization” in Hunan and one of “National Best 400 Organizations in Afforestation”. It has 30,000 pieces/sets of instruments and equipment for teaching and scientific research, which are worth more than CNY 100 million; the library has a building area of 22000m2, storing 1.84 million books and more than 6400 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals.
