Alan William Cramb, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Materials Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, former President (2015-2021) and former Provost of IIT. Professor Cramb received his BS in Metallurgy from Strathclyde University in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. As a world-renowned expert in materials engineering and a pioneer in steel metallurgy and continuous casting, Professor Cramb has conducted research in materials science and engineering for over 40 years. His groundbreaking studies cover the initial solidification behavior of steels, solidification of liquid oxides, clean steel production, and initial solidification phenomena in a continuous casting mold. He has published more than 200 papers in leading international journals. He has served as President of the Iron and Steel Society in 2000, President of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) in 2005, and Director of the Center for Iron and Steelmaking at Carnegie Mellon University.
