From Sep. 15 to 25, the delegation of the School of Materials Processing and Bioengineering led by Qiu Guanzhou, an academician of China Engineering Academy, paid a visit to Russia and participated in the 29th International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC2018), where they had in-depth discussion with multiple Russian colleges and universities on scientific research cooperation and talent cultivation, in response to the Belt and Road Initiative and for the purpose of promoting disciplinary development.
Participating in the top international academic conference on mineral processing and strengthening the construction of first-class disciplines
As the highest-profile and the most authoritative academic conference in the field of international mineral processing, the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) is held every 2 or 3 years and honored as the “Olympics” in this field. Since it was first held in London in 1952, the conference has been held for 28 times.
From Sep. 17 to 21, IMPC2018 was held successfully at the Moscow World Trade Center in Russia, and 28 representatives from the School of Materials Processing and Bioengineering of CSU were present.
Hosted by Russian Academy of Sciences and divided into two parts, i.e. an academic conference and an exhibition, IMPC2018 attracted over 1,900 participants from 48 countries (including over 730 official representatives participating in the academic conference and over 140 Chinese representatives). The academic conference received more than 580 academic papers from over 40 countries and included 11 parallel sessions where over 300 academic reports have been made, covering such academic topics as process mineralogy, milling and classifying, physical separation, magnetic and electric separation, surface chemistry, flotation and flotation reagent and biological metallurgy. In addition to the academic conference, IMPC2018-EXPO Mining and Mineral Processing, a 3-day exhibition, was held at the Moscow Convention and Exhibition Center and attracted over 80 mine enterprises and service providers from around the world.
Discussing directly with Russian universities about cooperation in exploration of mineral resources and talent cultivation under the Belt and Road Initiative
During IMPC2018, Academician Qiu Guanzhou and his delegation were invited by the Consulate-General of China in Saint Petersburg to visit Lomonosov Moscow State University from Sep. 15 to 25. They met with Sun Lailin, Consul on Education of the Consulate-General of China in Saint Petersburg, discussing about cooperation with Russian universities and joint training of new-type talents for exploration of mineral resources under the Belt and Road Initiative. They also paid a visit to the National University of Science and Technology MISiS and Saint-Petersburg Mining University.
On Sep. 20, Mr. Qiu visited the National University of Science and Technology MISiS and had a meeting with President Андрей Яковлевич Травянов. The National University of Science and Technology MISiS is a first-class university of metallurgy and President Андрей Яковлевич Травянов is a well-known expert in the field of metallurgy who paid a visit to the School of Materials Processing and Bioengineering of CSU in Apr. 2015. This time, the two sides had in-depth discussion on the current status and development of the titanium industry in Russia and China and the cooperation in scientific research and talent cultivation between the two universities. Mr. Qiu invited President Андрей Яковлевич Травянов to visit CSU again and discuss about andput into practice their strategic cooperation agreement.
On Sep. 22, Mr. Qiu met with Sun Lailin. Mr. Sun gave a detailed introduction to the basic situation of mineral, metallurgy biology and other disciplines of and learning and living conditions of Chinese students in Russian universities. After giving a report to the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges of CSU, Mr. Qiu conveyed opinions of CSU on strengthening education cooperation and exchanges between Russia and China under the Belt and Road Initiative. He wished that Mr. Sun could provide assistance in establishing a cooperative relationship in talent cultivation, discipline construction and scientific research between universities in Saint Petersburg and CSU and showed a welcome to Russian students to study in CSU. He said that CSU would set up an advanced experimental class of mineral processing for Russian students to cultivate excellent talents in mineral, metallurgy, biology and other relative disciplines and form a bond linking the education cooperation between Russia and China.
On Sep. 24, Mr. Qiu and his delegation were greeted by the Office of International Exchanges of St. Petersburg Mining University. St. Petersburg Mining University is a world-class university of mining which plays a leading role in the development of mine science, geology and metallurgy of Russia. Putin, President of Russia, who graduated from this university with doctoral degree in 1997, ever praised it as “one of the models for higher education of Russia”. St. Petersburg Mining University has a world-famous mining museum where rare specimens from over 80 countries all around the world are exhibited. Mr. Qiu and his delegation were invited to visit this museum as well as the laboratory built through a university-enterprise partnership, and had friendly exchanges with the faculties and students of the university. Later, Mr. Qiu met with President Бажин Владимир Юрьевич and they had in-depth discussion on the current status and development of mining industry in Russia and China, the extraction and smelting of light metals, and the cooperation and exchanges between St. Petersburg Mining University and CSU. After the meeting, President Бажин Владимир Юрьевич gave a present to Mr. Qiu.
