On the afternoon of Oct. 21, the closing meeting of the three-day “2ndInternational Workshop on Future Network Computing (FNC 2017)” was held in Changsha, Hunan Province. With the theme of “theoretical exploration and application potential of emerging patterns of network computing”, this workshop attracted more than 300 domestic and foreign scholars and experts who had a discussion on the development status, challenges and future direction of pillar areas of network computing pattern such as wireless network layout and system architecture design. The workshop was hosted by Central South University and co-undertaken by the School of Information Science and Engineering and the School of Software of Central South University. Zhang Yaoxue, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Central South University, and Prof. Sherman Shen, aFellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and professor of University of Waterloo, served as co-chairmen of the workshop.

This international workshop covers two major fields, i.e. computer and communication, and there are 13 keynote lectures concerning numerous research hotspots of academic and industrial communities including transparent computing, IoT operating system, automatic driving and IoV communication, UAV communication and networking, edge computing, fog computing, deep learning, multimedia network computing, mobile social network, wireless network layout, 5G communication, etc.

The lecture entitled “Preliminary Thinking of Distributed IoT Operating System” by Zhang Yaoxue was a hot spot. Zhang Yaoxue made an in-depth introduction to key technologies and implementation ideas of IoT operating system in simple words and his idea of “Stream Block as a Service” for network service mode was unanimously endorsed and widely concerned by guests and representatives present at the workshop. During the workshop, some guests and representatives made a full discussion on the theory and implementation details of IoT operating system. They believe that the conception of IoT operating system proposed by Academician Zhang Yaoxue provides a good development direction for application and popularity of IoT technologies.

Other experts who gave a keynote lecture at the seminar included Prof. Yang Yuanyuan from State University of New York at Stony Brook (IEEE Fellow), Prof. Nei Kato from Tohoku University (IEEE Fellow), Prof. Zhu Wenwu from Tsinghua University (chief scientist of 973 Program and expert of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts), Prof. Xu Jin from Peking University, Prof. Zhang Junshan from Arizona State University (IEEE Fellow), Prof. Wan Pengjun from Illinois Institute of Technology (IEEE Fellow), Prof. Li Tao from University of Florida (NSF Program Director), Prof. Zhang Wei from University of New South Wales (IEEE Fellow), Prof. Luo Junzhou from Southeast University (President of School of Computing), Prof. Chen Shanzhi (Vice President of Datang Telecom and Director of National Wireless Mobile Communications Research Laboratory) and Doctor Qi Yihong (expert of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, co-founder and CEO of DBJ Technologies (Zhuhai) Co., Ltd.). Besides, over 100 scholars from other universities attended this workshop, including distinguished young scholars, Changjiang scholars and experts covered by theRecruitment Program of Global Young Experts.
