Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University in Hungary, Appointed as Honorary Professor of CSU

On December 9, Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University in Hungary, was appointed as an honorary professor of CSU. CSU President Li Jiancheng and Vice President Li Zhihong attended the appointment ceremony.

Born in Hungary in 1966, Béla Merkely has served as Rector of Semmelweis University since 2018. As a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), Merkely has established a strong reputation for academic excellence in the medical world. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Széchenyi Prize and the Hungarian Order of Merit. Béla Merkely has been actively facilitating educational exchanges and cooperation in the medical field between Semmelweis University and CSU. For instance, he played a crucial role in the signing of memorandums of cooperation between the two universities in 2018 and 2024.

Li Jiancheng presented the appointment letter to Béla Merkely and put a school badge on his suit. Li was convinced that, with Béla Merkely’s support and guidance, CSU and Semmelweis University will continuously improve their collaboration in talent cultivation, innovation in scientific research, and cultural exchanges, ultimately contributing more to the development of medical science and human health care. Béla Merkely promised that he, as Rector of Semmelweis University, will promote the academic exchanges and cooperation between the two sides with unwavering efforts, so as to advance the development of medical and health care, and benefit both the Chinese and the Hungarian people.

The Rector was invited to attend events commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Xiangya School of Medicine. During this occasion, he delivered the keynote speech at a conference sub-forum, visited the cardiovascular sector of Second Xiangya Hospital, and had in-depth discussions with experts at the hospital.
