On the afternoon of November 15, Erika Elvander, representative of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in China, visited Central South University (CSU), accompanied by Mpaza Kapembwa, Economic Section Chief of the US Consulate General in Wuhan, and Zhang Jiaming, Deputy Director of the Americas and Oceania Division of the Foreign Affairs Working Committee of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee. Leaders of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges and Xiangya School of Nursing attended the meeting.

The visit is intended to follow up on the results of US Ambassador Nicholas Burns' visit to Hunan in September of this year, and to further promote US-China cooperation in the field of global health. Erika Elvander hoped to take this opportunity to learn about the international cooperation and exchange work of CSU, especially the exchange and cooperation between Xiangya School of Nursing and the US, in order to promote the recovery of cooperation and exchange between Chinese and US universities in the post-pandemic era.

Yin Gang, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, introduced CSU’s history, disciplinary characteristics and internationalization strategy. Guo Jia, Vice Dean of Xiangya School of Nursing, introduced the School’s basic information, educational strength and international cooperation, especially the cooperative master’s degree program in nursing between CSU and the University of California, San Francisco.

Zhang Jiaming expressed hopes to further strengthen cooperation between CSU and Yale University on the basis of their past 110-year cooperation, and further implement the results of the meeting between Shen Xiaoming, Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, and US Ambassador Nicholas Burns, as well as the foresight program put forward during Vice Governor Qin Guowen's visit to Yale University.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on specific matters such as strengthening China-US cooperation in scientific research and education, promoting China-US exchanges of teachers and students, and areas of cooperation in public health.

On the afternoon of November 16, the group led by Erika Elvander also visited the Mental Health Institute of the Second Xiangya Hospital of CSU, and had discussions on promoting international cooperation and exchanges in the prevention and treatment of drug and substance abuse.
