On October 25 - 28, 2019, the 20th National Conference on Electrochemistry, sponsored by Chinese Society of Electrochemistry (CSE) of Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), hosted by Central South University (CSU) and co-organized by Hunan University, Xiangtan University, Changsha University of Science and Technology and the Electrochemical Society, was held in Hunan International Convention and Exhibition Center. Over 5,000 representatives from more than 500 universities and research institutes and 100 enterprises across the country participated in this grand event. In addition, experts from universities and research institutions from the United States, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, China were invited to the conference.

Under the theme of "Electrochemistry Promotes Industrial Development" and focusing on the basic application and frontier problem of electrochemical science and technology development, the conference comprehensively demonstrated the latest research progress and achievements made by China in the field of electrochemistry and discussed the opportunities and challenges faced with and the future development orientation, in a bid to promote the development and progress of electrochemistry in China; it emphasized the cooperation between industry, universities and research institutes and technical transformation, the application of electrochemical science and technology in important fields such as energy, environment and materials, so as to realize sustainable development of the society. Meanwhile, the International Forum on Electrochemistry was held by the conference and the Electrochemical Society (ECS) jointly, which was attended by 27 well-known experts from China and abroad to make special reports. In line with the theme of this conference, the Electrochemical Industry Forum was set up, and 31 academicians, experts and entrepreneurs attended to introduce the current status, prospects and challenges of the electrochemical industry, very helpful for the combination of basic research and industrial application in electrochemical industry.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Tang Yougen, Director of the Organizing Committee of the Conference and Director of the CSU Institute of Chemical Power and Materials. Academician Chen Jun, Director of the Academic Committee of the Conference and Director of CSE, delivered an opening speech. Mr. Chen Jun said that, the development of electrochemical discipline and career in China was encouraging; Domestic electrochemical workers had made prominent achievements and China’s international influence was increasing. He also called for promoting interdisciplinary development and strengthening industry-college-institute cooperation, and striving to solve the bottleneck problem in related fields. Professor Guo Xueyi, a Vice President of CSU, gave a welcome speech. Academician Sun Shigang, Vice Chairman of CCS, Gao Feixue, Director of the Second Chemical Division of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Academician Tian Zhongqun, Chairman of the International Society of Electrochemistry, respectively delivered a speech. Professor Xia Yongyao, Chairman of the Conference and Director of CSE, announced the winners of the Electrochemical Achievement Award, the Electrochemical Contribution Award, the Electrochemical Youth Award, and the Excellent Paper Award for Journal of Electrochemistry and the Best Participation and Organization Award, and relevant guests awarded prizes to the winners.

A total of 2,409 abstracts of papers were received at the Conference. The Conference set up 19 venues for academic exchanges, including nanometer and material electrochemistry, fuel cell, lithium ion cell, sodium/potassium ion cell, flow cell, metal air cell, organic and polyvalent metal ion and water-based secondary battery, solid state battery, supercapacitor, electrocatalysis, bioelectrochemistry and electroanalytical chemistry, basic electrochemistry, solar cell and photoelectrochemistry, industrial electrochemistry, postgraduate innovation forum, international electrochemical forum, and electrochemical industry forum. A total of 7 keynote speeches, 972 sub-forum reports, invited reports, oral reports, graduate innovation reports and 1,430 posters were presented. These reports and posters comprehensively reflected the development level of China in the field of electrochemistry in recent years.
