On June 13th, Professor T.J. Gan, Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Chairman of the American Society for Enhanced Recovery (ASER), came to the Department of Anesthesiology, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, for academic exchanges, and made an academic report entitled “Enhanced Recovery: Moving Towards Standard of Care".

Fluid therapy is an important treatment in the perioperative period. Unreasonable infusion leads to positive fluid balance and body edema, and increases postoperative complications. There have been many debates in the academic world for decades about whether fluid therapy should adopt restrictive or open strategies. Perioperative fluid therapy is also the most difficult part of the various ERAS (Enhanced Recovery after Surgery) regimens. The goal-oriented principle put forward in 2001 greatly promoted the development of perioperative fluid therapy. Professor T.J. Gan mainly elaborated the latest research findings and concepts of goal-oriented cycle monitoring and fluid optimization, and proposed a view that a systematic and standardized process could accelerate the postoperative recovery of patients.

The academic lecture was hosted by Professor Qulian Guo from the Department of Anesthesiology, Xiangya Hospital. More than 100 physicians, graduate students, fellow physicians and resident physicians from the Department of Anesthesiology attended the meeting. Participants said that Professor T.J. Gan’s lecture was humorous, scientific and rigorous, and they learnt a lot from the lecture.
