On the morning of Jan. 9, Central South University Appointment Ceremony of Gust Professor was held in the Meeting Room II of Office Building I of CSU for Prof. Sten H. Vermud, the Dean of Yale School of Public Health, and Assoc. Prof. Mayur M. Desai.
In the ceremony, Tan Hong, the Dean of Xiangya School of Public Health, first made a brief introduction of the two guest professors, and then, Tian Hongqi, the President of CSU presented the appointment letters to them. Prof. Sten said that he comes here to study with a sincere heart, and he have been curious about China and anxious to come here since his student days and have seen the great changes happening in China. In particular, he mentioned the barefoot doctors in 1960s – 1970s who were distributed in countryside areas throughout China and made outstanding contribution to the improvement of countryside medical and health care and the sharp increase in average life expectancy in China from 35 years to 67 years in the absence of rapid economic growth, making China lead the world in basic health care and providing economic backward areas around the world with a reference mode to solve the medical care problem of ordinary people.
In her address, President Tian expressed thanks to Prof. Sten’s concern on China and said she also experienced the period of countryside medical and health care mentioned by Prof. Sten. She also looked back at the long history of the friendly relations between Yale University and Xiangya School of Medicine and between Yale-China Association and Xiangya affiliated hospitals and forward to the future cooperation and joint efforts to promote the development of global medical cause. Besides, President Tian made an introduction to the “Double First-class” disciplines of CSU and expressed the wish to strengthen scientific research cooperation with Yale University in traffic, material and other key disciplines.
After the appointment ceremony, the two sides discussed their participation in research on the key problems concerning global health.
Also attending the appointment ceremony were Prof. Kaveh Khoshnood of Yale School of Public Health, Ms. Lucy Yang, Project Officer of Yale-China Association, Chen Xiang, Vice President of CSU, and the heads of Department of Human Resources, Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Department of Hospital Administration, Xiangya School of Medicine and School of Public Health.
