On the afternoon of Nov. 7, a delegation from the Consulate General of the United States in Wuhan, consisting of 8 members including Jamie Fouss (General Consul), Michael Dubray (News Culture Consul) and Jonathan Adams (Economic Consul), visited Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and were warmly welcomed and received by Lei Guanghua (Vice President), Li Xuejun (Vice Director of Hospital Office and Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges), Gong Min (Director of theGeneral Office of International Medical Center)and others.

In the symposium, General Consul Jamie Fouss said that the main purpose of their trip is to visit Xiangya International Medical Center—a product of cooperation between Xiangya Hospital and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and also a model for cooperation between China and America in the field of medical treatment and health.
Vice President Lei Guanghua introduced the long history, development process and current situation of Xiangya Hospital and the establishment background, purpose and development situation of Xiangya International Medical Center.David Kroom, Project Director of Xiangya International Medical Center assigned by UPMC, and Prof. Zhang Liming, Vice Director for Medical Business in China of International Department of UPMC, were also present at the symposium.
After the symposium, the delegation led by General Consul Jamie Fouss paid a site visit to the outpatient department and Ward 54 (a surgical ward) of Xiangya International Medical Center, in the company of Director Gong Min, David Kroon, Doctor Zhang Liming, Peng Emin (Clinic Head Nurse of Xiangya International Medical Center) and Peng Hua (Head Nurse of Ward 54).
David Kroon and Doctor Zhang Liming introduced to the delegation led by General Consul the service seeking pattern, payment mode and medical insurance reimbursement in Xiangya International Medical Center. Dong Chao and Long Yanfang, a surgeon and a nurse of Xiangya International Medical Center respectively, and presented the high-quality medical and nursing system that meets the international standard of JCI, the patient-centered service seeking experience and the charge for medical service relatively lower than that in America.Besides, Doctor Dong Chao emphatically introduces the “3H” concept (“Hospital + Home + Hotel”), which was proposed in the beginning of international ward design and has been practiced up to now—building a hospital with professional personnel and excellent equipment where procedure handling is as simple as that in hotel and nursing service is as sweet as that in home.
General Consul Jamie Fouss raved about the environment and service of Xiangya International Medical Center, spoke highly of the efforts made by Xiangya International Medical Center to improve patients’ service seeking experience, and remarked jokingly that he is willing to stay there to enjoy the first-class service and environment even though he is not sick.

In recent years, Xiangya Hospital has actively implemented the internationalization strategy, setting up the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, assigning faculty members and medical students (around 350 person-times) abroad for exchanges, hiring over one hundred internationally known experts as visiting professors, establishing friendly relationship with numerous overseas medical colleges/institutions, encouraging faculty members to participate in high-level international cooperative research and various academic activities, and founding Xiangya International Medical Center with UPMC as a “fast lane” for internationalization of Xiangya Hospital.
It is learnt that Xiangya International Medical Center was officially opened in July 2015 and passed JCI certification with high scores in Dec. 2016.Now, Xiangya International Medical Center has set up an outpatient department and two wards (a medical ward and a surgical ward) with 35 beds and signed contracts with 21 domestic and overseas commercial insurance companies, aiming at providing high-quality medical services that meet international standards for international patients in Hunan and surrounding regions and Chinese patients with high-end medical demands.
