Geosciences and Info-physics

School of Geosciences and Info-Physics of Central South University was established in October, 2010 on the basis of amalgamation of the former School of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering and School of Info-Physics. The school has 6 departments and 1 center: Department of Applied Geophysics, Department of Geological Resources, Department of Surveying and Remote Sensing Science, Department of Geological Engineering, Department of Geo-Informatics, Department of Biomedical and Information Engineering, and Experiment Center. In addition, Institute of Geological Survey in Central South University, Resource Exploration and Environmental Geology Research Institute of Central South University, and Changsha Geotectonic Research Institute of Central South University are affiliated to the school.

The school has 54 professors, 55 vice professors and 54 lecturers. Of all 197 faculty members, the school possesses 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 members of “the Recruitment Program of Global Experts”, 1 member of "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" ,2 members of "the New Century Talents Project" ,4 members of the Ministry of Education 's New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan,3 members of CSU’s Shenghua Scholars Program and Shenghua Cultivating Talents Program,1 young teacher award winner of the Ministry of Education and 1 chair professor. The school also has an innovation research team of Hunan Province.

With the development of nearly sixty years, the original Department of Geology, the present School of Geosciences and Info-Physics has created a glorious history, formed an excellent academic atmosphere, and lied a solid foundation. The late Guoda Chen, an academician of Chinese Academy of Science, discovered "Diwa Theory" and Jishan He, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, invented "Pseudo Random Signal Coding Electrical Method", which are all prestigious in the world. The school has enormous advantages and characteristics in the aspects of tectonic and metallogenic prediction, electromagnetic prospecting theories and equipments, deformation monitoring methods and instruments, complex formation comprehensive drilling technology and geological simulation calculation, etc.

During the construction of National 211 Project and National 985 Project, the school covers one national key discipline “Geodetection and Information Technology”, two provincial key disciplines “Mining Resource Prospecting and Exploration” and “Geodesy and Survey Engineering”and 2 CSU’s key disciplines “Geological Engineering”and “Biomedical Engineering”. For teaching and scientific research, the school also built “Key Laboratory of Metallogenic Prediction of Nonferrous Metals and Geological Environment Monitoring, Ministry of Education”, “Key Laboratory of Non-Ferrous Resources and Geological Hazard Detection”, “Chinese Non-ferrous Metals Info-Physics Engineering Center ” and “Geo-Spatial Information Engineering Technology Research Center of Hunan Province”, etc.

In the past five years, the school undertook nearly 50 projects, financially aid by the national 973 Plan, the national 863 plan and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with an annual scientific research funds exceeding 50000000 RMB. Leaded by the school, the research "Theory and Application of Uniform Broad-Spectrum Pseudo-Random Signal Coding Electromagnetic Method" in 2006 and "Technology of Automatic Gyro Orientation with Accuracy Better Than + 5 and Robot Displacement Monitoring with Precision Sub Millimeter" in 2008 obtained the second prize of national science and technology invention award. The school also got more than 20 prizes, either the first prize or the second prize of the provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress award, more than 30 state authorized invention patents ,more than 20 utility model patents and more than 10 national software copyright registrations. At the same time, the talented faculty has published more than 40 monographs and more than 1000 academic papers, including more than 200 papers indexed by SCI or EI.

Facing with the national industrial needs, School of Geosciences and Info-Physics of Central South University envisions for the future to enhance its status and role in the CSU’s characteristics and advantages, and strives to become a domestic first-class and internationally renowned school, especially in talent training, scientific research and social services.
