“International Symposium on Cryobiology and Living Biobanking & Forum on Innovation for College Students 2019 (CBLB2019), hosted by Central South University (CSU) and organized by CSU School of Life Science and CSU School of Basic Medical Science, was held in Changsha on September 21 to 23. Over 600 experts from 8 countries have discussed on further development and research of biobank in China. Wu Haiquan, CSU deputy secretary of CPC and secretary of Committee for Discipline Inspection, attended the symposium and made a speech.

On the four sessions of the symposium, experts talked over the topics of cryobiology and construction of biobank; besides, many enterprises displayed their new technologies and products in this international conference. The ethical issues of preservation and utilization of human genetic resources as well as the resource advantages provided by biobank to the development of modern biomedicine technology and implementation of precision medicine strategy became the hot topics among the representatives. Activities such as Roundtable Discussions of Biobank Directors in China, Culture Forum on the Preservation of Human Remains and International Forum on Innovation for College Students have been held during the symposium.

The experts like Bian Xiuwu, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, indicated that with the implementation ofHealthy China2030(HC2030),China must accelerate the protection and utilization of human genetic resources, increase stable investment in the construction of resource guarantee platform and carry out rational layout. In their speech, it was stressed that the standardization construction and qualification assessment be quickened for the “living bank” of human genetic resource at the level of clinical application and various human-derived cells and preparations be affordable, accessible and reliable to common people as soon as possible.

It is known thatOutline of “Healthy China 2030”issued at the end of 2016 has made the importance of basic medical research increasingly obvious. With the R&D of targeted drug and precision diagnostic reagent as well as development of stem cell and immune cell treatment, the demand of biological sample is increasing continuously. Due to the large variety of entities and nationalities, China has a rich biobank of human genetic samples, the strategic resources at the source level for future biotechnology development and cornerstone and stepping-stone to success in future science and technology competition.

Huang Jufang, the dean of CSU School of Life Science, said: “we will set up an international communication platform and, under strict ethical examination and administrative licensing, strive to explore the best way to preserve and utilize human genetic resources, and use powerful technical guarantee system to provide continuous resource guarantee for precision medical treatment and individualized treatment”.
