Liu Ye Xiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

Liu Ye Xiang, a CPC member, male, Han nationality, was born in 1930 in Wuhan city, Hubei Province.

In 1953 he graduated from Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (the predecessor of Central South University). From 1979 to 1982, he studied abroad at Norwegian University of Technology, and was a senior visiting scholar of Norwegian University of Technology, Nagoya University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

He once served as Secretary of the CPC Committee, Secretary and President of the former Central South University of Technology, member of Discipline Review Committee of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Discipline Group Member of Geology, Mining and Metallurgy of Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, Member of the Discipline Review Committee of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Expert Group Member of Postdoctoral Management Committee of Ministry of Personnel and academic counselor for Hunan Provincial Government. In 1997 he was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He currently is a professor and doctoral supervisor of Central South University, the Executive Director of Nonferrous Metals Society of China and the Director of Light Metal Science Committee, and a senior member of American TMS, etc.

Professor Liu is one of the Chinese academic leaders in non-ferrous metallurgy disciplines. Being long engaged in the technology research and application in the non-ferrous metallurgy, particularly in the light metal metallurgy and energy-saving of electrochemical metallurgy, his researches and practices have achieved great achievement in such aspects as electro-catalytic technology of high-temperature molten salt, energy saving technology for lithium salt anode paste, functional electrode materials and the metallurgical process simulation, control and optimization.

In 1992 he won the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, also two first prizes and three second prizes of provincial and ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award. He has obtained 32 patents, and won the China Outstanding Patent Award, the Guangzhao EST Prize of Hunan Province, the National Guanghua EST Prize and other honors. Having been engaged in teaching and research for 57 years, he has educated over 60 students to obtain doctoral and master’s degree, and published 4 monographs and more than 300 papers.
