Zhou Honghao, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering

Zhou Honghao, male, Han nationality, was born in Changsha, Hunan Province in May 1939. In 1962, he graduated from the medical department at Wuhan Medical College. In 1983, he went to the University of Hong Kong Medical School for Clinical Pharmacology training, then he worked as senior fellow of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University in the United States. He returned to create China's first Institute of Genetics and Pharmacology in 1991. In March 1995, he was appointed to be vice president of Hunan Medical University, and director of Institute of Clinical Pharmacology of Central South University in February 2002. In December 2005, he was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Professor Zhou Honghao is pioneer, leader and of pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics discipline, and founder of individualized medicine. He has dedicated to the teaching, research and transformation of pharmacology and pharmacogenomics. His major contribution in scientific research is found and clarify a number of phenomena, mechanisms and laws to genetic factors cause drug racial and individual differences, the establishment of theoretical system in genetic pharmacology with Chinese national and ethic characteristics. With his discovery and cloning of CYP2C19 * 5 allele, he pioneered to apply the genetic theory to clinical pharmacology, created the first counseling center of individualized medicine in China, devised the first gene chip for individualized medicine therapy, and launched pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics based treatment as "tailored" individualized medicine.

After 30 years of systematic research, results become accumulated, precipitated and concise. Over 160 papers published in international SCI journals including the "New England Journal of Medicine" as the first or corresponding author, have been cited 2436 times as of March 2012. Eight foreign monographs or textbooks have listed them as references. Chief editor of English and Chinese monographs in "Pharmacogenetics", 5 textbooks for medical graduate student, 6 English and Chinese textbooks of "Pharmacology" for five-year and eight-year Medical Colleges. He has won Henry Christian Award which is the highest prize by the American Society of Clinical Award, and won Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and five awards at provincial and ministerial level. He has trained master’s, doctoral degree and post-doctoral students, which is totally more than 200. Professor Zhou Honghao is one of the founders of the International Society for Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics, and created and served as the first director of the Professional Committee of the Chinese Pharmacological and Pharmacogenomics Society editorial He is the editorial committee of "Pharmacogenet Genomics" and other five foreign magazines, and judge of American Merck International Clinical Pharmacology Scholarship.
