Xiangya School of Nursing

Hsiang Ya nursing School, the predecessor of School of Nursing Central South University, was found on Nov. 5th 1911.  The school has since been well-known for the cultivation of nursing professionals in high quality within her over 100 year’s history.

School of Nursing is one of the 32 schools of Central South University. The fields of study at Central South University cover 10 branches of learning, namely engineering, science, medicine, management, literature, law, economics, philosophy, education and history. CSU has 32 schools and institutes, and offers bachelor’s degree in 78 specialties, master’s degree in 207 specialties and doctorate degree in 128 specialties. CSU has 18 postdoctoral exchange centers and has 15 academicians who are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 12 academicians who are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

School of Nursing CSU has kept the traditions of Xiangya Education and followed the school motto of “Diligence, Honesty, Preciseness and Fortitude”. We offer three levels of nursing education program: baccalaureate nursing program, graduate nursing program and doctorial nursing program.  There are 30 full time faculty lecturers and 168 part time instructors with 9 doctorial mentors and 35 advisors for graduate students. More than 40% of all the lecturers are academic professionals who are either professors or associate professors. We are rich in teaching resources and have standard advanced teaching equipment. There are several research and teaching centers/laboratory namely; fundamental nursing laboratory, community nursing laboratory and clinical nursing laboratory. All these have advanced practical equipment. There are high-level practice bases for clinical study which include three affiliated hospitals of CSU, Peking Union Hospital, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, the First Hospital of Shanghai, and so on.

We offer high quality of nursing education with emphasis on improving medical knowledge, communication skills, critical thinking skills and clinical nursing skills. Our school offers high standard courses. Three of our courses received Elaborate awards. Community Nursing was awarded as National Elaborate Course in 2008, Surgical Nursing and Medical Nursing were awarded as University Elaborate Course this year 2011.

Teachers in our school participate actively in research. We have been awarded 27 projects and funded up to 10 million RMB this decade.  Currently the Research interests revolve around the following:

 HIV/AIDS care: medication adherence, stigma and discrimination

 Mental health care for the elderly: depression screening, cognitive assessment,

 Development of laboratory techniques for aging osteoporosis  

 Community nursing education model

 Mental health assessment and intervention for patients with chronic illness

We have a broad and strong collaborations with universities and institutions from the US, Canada, Australia, and southeast counties. On a count, numerous nursing students, nurse-scholars, and nursing leaders of our school have partnered with Yale school of Nursing and received some training under Yale-China scholarship Association. Close to one third of our faculty members have received training at Yale for a half year or more.

Prospecting the future, we will carry forward the good traditions and continue to work hard scaling up new heights in nursing education and research, thus creating an even brighter future for Xiangya nursing education of CSU.
