School of Mathematics and Statistics of CSU

Overview

The school of mathematics and statistics (SMS) of CSU was founded in April, 2000 on the basis of the amalgamation of the three former individual mathematical disciplines from Central South University of Technology, Hunan Medical University and Changsha Railway University. The SMS’s consituent departments the Department of Pure Mathematics, the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Information and Scientific Computation, the Department of Statistics, the Advanced Mathematics Teaching Research Center, the Institute of Probability and Statistics, the Mathematics Teaching Experiment Center as well as three Administrative Offices.

The SMS has 122 staffs, including 99 academic faculties (32 professors, 36 associate professors and 31 lecturers). Four professors are listed in the "Cross-century Talents Cultivation Plan" and the “Supporting Plan to the New Century Excellent Talents " by the Ministry of Education; one is listed in the "One Hundred Talent Plan" of Hunan Province; two distinguished the "Sheng-hua scholar professors" by the Central South University; two enjoy special government allowance; and one is honered as the provincial famous teacher.

The SMS offers high quality undergraduate programmes (BSc (Hons) in disciplines of Mathematics and Applied mathematics from 1977, Information and Computational sciences from 1996, and Statistics from 2002. The SMS offers postgraduate programmes (MSc/Ph.D) in Mathematics and Statistics, one of the earliest units who possess the mathematics doctoral discipline as prescribed by the State Council Degree Committee by the Ministry of Education in 1981. The Probability and Mathematical Statistics" was named as the national first batch of national key disciplines, and listed as one of the key construction disciplines for the "15 Planning " and "211 Project" by the Central South University in 2001.

The SMS encourages academic staff and postgraduates to conduct high impact and important applications in mathematics, statistics and engineering. Among the thousands of graduates, a great number of excellent scholars have made significant contributions in the academic circles at home and abroad, and also emerged a batch of national outstanding talents in various industries. A young scholar, Liu Lu, for example, cracked the Seetapun Conjecture in sophomore year.

With the accelerating pace of the construction of the Central South University being a world famous university in recent years, the SMS is developing in strides forward. Facing the opportunities and challenges in the new century, the SMS will work hard and strive to build up its first-class disciplines of mathematics and statistics in order to cultivate more talents.
