Lyu Ben's Team from CSU Publishes a Paper in Blood to Reveal Pathogenesis of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) in Sepsis

On April 2, the team of Professor Lyu Ben from the Department of Hematology, Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University published a research article entitled “The role of type 1 interferons in Gram-negative bacteria-induced coagulation” in Blood (a top international hematology journal) in the forms of Plenary Paper (only one per issue) and Cover Report with Dr. Yang Xinyu and Dr. Cheng Xiaoye from the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University as the co-first authors, and Professor Lyu Ben as the corresponding author.

This paper describes that type 1 interferon and its downstream effector high-mobility group box 1(HMGB1) activate the coagulation system in sepsis, reveals the important underlying mechanism of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) caused by bacterial infections, a life-threatening condition, and provides potential targets for drug intervention. Professor Wolfram Ruf, an international authoritative expert in the field of thrombosis, commented in the contemporaneous review of Blood that this discovery is an unexpectedly important breakthrough that deeply reveals the internal connection between coagulation and immunity.

It is reported that the above study is an important continuation of the preliminary work of Professor Lyu Ben's team. In recent years, the team has revealed an important pathogenic mechanism of multiple organ failure and the formation of DIC in sepsis - excessive activation of the PKR-HMGB1-Caspase-11 pathway, and published a series of high-level Nature Index (NI) papers in top journals, includingImmunity (2 papers), Blood, Nat Commun and J Biol Chem (2 papers). The team also has been invited to make special or keynote speeches at important academic conferences at home and abroad for many times.
