On the morning of June 28, CSU President Tian Hongqi met with Professor Billiar R. Timothy, Vice President for Academic Affairs of the School of Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh (PITT), the winner of Chinese Government Friendship Award and an expert included in the Recruitment Program for Foreign Experts (the Thousand Talents Program) by the Third Xiangya Hospital of CSU. The other attendees included Professor Zhang Liming, Deputy Director of the Global Services in China of the School of Medicine of PITT, CSU leaders Tao Lijian and Chen Xiang, responsible persons from the CSU units like the Department of Hospital Administration, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges and the Third Xiangya Hospital.
President Tian Hongqi gave full affirmation to the achievements of the cooperation between the two universities in recent years in joint training of medical students, medical research, big data, and so on. She said that CSU attached great importance to the cooperation with PITT and the two universities had their own specialty characteristics. She hoped that both sides could cooperate at a deeper level and in more fields.
Professor Billiar introduced his work at CSU in recent years, especially focusing on three aspects: Xiangya-PITT joint training of eight-year medical students, cooperation with the Third Xiangya Hospital on scientific research, preparation for establishment and operation of Xiangya International Medical Department. Professor Billiar claimed that he would continue to spare no effort in making suggestions to push the Xiangya-PITT cooperation at a full and deep level. At the same time, he thanked CSU and the Third Xiangya Hospital for the long time support to his work, and invited President Tian Hongqi to PITT.

Professor Timothy R. Billiar is a member of National Academy of Sciences of the United States, the winner of Medalion Prize - the highest medical honor in the United States, Chairman of American Society of Shock, Vice President for academic affairs of PITT, and Chair of the Surgery Department of School of Medicine of PITT. He was successfully declared among the 10th batch of foreign experts under China’s “Thousand Talents Program” by the Third Xiangya Hospital of CSU in 2014. He now is a professor and doctoral supervisor of the Clinical Translational Medicine Center of Vascular Disease of CSU. Professor Billiar has been making outstanding contributions to the internationalization of China’s medical and health services for many years, and won the 2016 Chinese Government Friendship Award in October, 2016.
