Zuo Tieyong, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering
Zuo Tieyong, male, Han nationality, was born in September in Beijing, CPC member. In 1958, he graduated from Northeastern University.
During 1958-1991, Academician Zuo Tieyong served as professor, PhD supervisor and vice president of Central South University. From 1991 to 1996, director of Department of Science and Technology of State Education Commission. From 1996 to 2004, he was the president of the Beijing University of Technology. From 1996 to 2006 he was appointed as vice-chairman of CAST. In May 1995, he was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is currently the director of the Academic Committee of Beijing University, member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, deputy director of Education Committee of Chinese Academy of Engineering, deputy director of Science and Technology Committee of Ministry of Education, University Laboratory Steering Committee, vice chairman of China Nonferrous Metals Society, chairman of Local University Education Research Branch of Chinese Higher Education Association, Chinese committee of international Pacific Science Society (PSA) and the International Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), academic committee of the State Key Laboratory and other academic positions among major universities.
Academician Zuo Tieyong is a renowned experts in material sciences and engineering, who is an important contributor to the national 973 Program that has been engaged in teaching and research work in the field of materials science, specializing in metallic materials and plastic processing especially in refractory metals, rare earth functional materials, low plastic material, aluminum and magnesium materials and the processing, which have reached high-level academic attainment and made outstanding contributions. In recent years, he opened up the field of environment ecological materials in China and promoted the in-depth study on recycling economy. In teaching, he is the prize winner of "National Excellent Courses", national "Universities Distinguished Teacher" and the "National Teaching Achievement Award". In scientific research, he undertook a number of national key scientific and technological projects under "7th 5-year Plan ", "8th 5-year Plan ", "9th 5-year Plan ", "10th 5-year Plan ", and has made achievements on a number of systematic and creative research which are of great importance to the development of national defense, military, basic materials of electronics industry, and has contributed and achieved remarkable economic and social benefits. He has been awarded 15 national, provincial awards in science and technology. In 1991, he was awarded the honorary title of the "National Outstanding Contributions of Young Experts in Science and Technology ".
