English Department
The English Department at the School of Foreign Languages offers undergraduate English Major program and graduate English major program. Our undergraduate English major program, one of the earliest English major degree programs offered by universities of sciences and engineering in China, is recognized as a specialty degree program by Hunan Provincial Education Commission and China’s Ministry of Education. Its major mission is to equip students with solid English language skills and broad knowledge in related fields so that they will be professionally ready for jobs such as translation, interpretation, teaching, research, management for a wide range of fields, including foreign affairs, business, culture, media, education, research, tourism, etc.
French Department
The French Department at the School of Foreign Languages offers undergraduate French Major program and graduate French major program. The undergraduate French major program is one of the earliest French major degree programs offered by university of sciences and engineering in China. Its major mission is to equip students with solid French language skills and broad knowledge in related fields so that they will be professionally ready for jobs such as translation, interpretation, teaching, research, management for a wide range of fields, including foreign affairs, business, culture, media, education, research, tourism, etc.
Japanese Program
Since 1980’s, Japanese Major began to enroll the adult education and self-study examination students. And since 1999, the full-time undergraduates have been enrolled into the Japanese Major. There are around 100 undergraduates and postgraduates in Japanese major. And there are 12 regular teachers including 2 doctors and one doctor candidate with rich teaching experience, high professional quality, and all of them have once been to Japan studying or working.
The multi-media classrooms, language laboratories, simultaneous interpretation classrooms and reference rooms with rich books in School of Foreign Languages can fully meet the demand of Japanese teaching and scientific research. The Japanese major students have good grades in CJT4 and Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level, and the Japanese major graduates are active in diplomatic, cultural, educational and economic and commercial departments.
Teachers of this discipline have abundant teaching experience and rigorous / meticulous scholarship. The courses are theoretical and frontal. The students of this course have excellent language application ability and many Japanese graduates have won the outstanding achievement in many competitions such as the National Japanese professional graduates speech and debate contest and the Japanese speech contest in China.

The graduate English major program offers doctoral degree in English Language and Literature, and master’s degree in English Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature and World Literature, and Curriculum and Pedagogy. Among them, the master’s degree programs in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Curriculum and Pedagogy are the key programs in Hunan Province. Meanwhile, it has also established a practical master’s degree program of Translation and Interpretation (MTI) recognized as one of the earliest 9 MTI programs in China.
French Department
The French Department at the School of Foreign Languages offers undergraduate French Major program and graduate French major program.The graduate French major program offers master’s degree inFrench Language and Literature. Students are provided with multi-media classrooms, phonetic lab, interpretation training centre, department library and stable practice bases.

Japanese language and literature is the secondary discipline of foreign languages and literature. It mainly studies Japanese linguistics, Japanese lexicology and comparative study between Chinese and Japanese. Japanese Linguistics includes Japanese phonetics, Japanesegrammar, general linguistics, comparative study and translation research between Chinese and Japanese. Japanese lexicology research includes Japanese lexicology, Sino Japanese vocabulary exchange history and comparative study of Chinese and Japanese vocabulary.
